Achsah: A Woman who Asks for Land and Water is a Woman with a Bold Plan

Women of the Bible Series – Post #1

Summary: Verse of Reference – Joshua 15:13-19

Achsah/Aksah, the daughter of Caleb, was given to Othniel as a prize for winning the war against Kiriath Sepher. However, Aksah was not simply a prize because she had the vision to build wealth. She urged her husband to ask her father, Caleb, to give her a field from the tribe of Juda, and her father granted her request. But she did not stop there; she went to her father and requested a water spring for her field. Her father provided her with not one but two springs of water, “the upper and the lower springs.”

Lesson:

Fast forward to the woman of Proverbs 31, King Solomon describes the type of woman who is as bold as owning land and building her wealth. That’s a woman who is “more precious than ruby (Proverbs 31:10)”; She considers a field and buys it, and out of her earnings, she plants a vineyard (Proverbs 31:16).

That woman paid for her field, but Achsah was given hers for free because she requested it. The word of God said, “ask, and it shall be given to you … for everyone who asks receives… if you, who are evil, give good gifts to your sons, how much more will the heavenly Father give? (Mathew 7:7, Luke 11:9-13).

Aksah must have desired to own land before her marriage, and she must have had a nurturing relationship with her father, Caleb, before anything else. The way she made her request, “do me a favor..” was not a formal talk or request; she was comfortable asking, no matter how big her request was. And for her father to respond affirmatively to her requests with surplus and without hesitation proves that her father, Caleb, loved her dearly.

It’s easy to deduct from this Bible story that Achsah was simply considered a prize for war, and her father gave her away. But far from that, Achsah was a woman of high value; she was loved dearly.

A woman who asks for land and water intends to cultivate that land for something bigger. The woman of Proverbs 31 planted a vineyard from her land and did many other great things with her earnings. At that time, this was a profitable business (and still is today). Aksah was bold and confident, with a vision to build lasting value.

Reflection:

Have you asked your Father for land? Think of your boldest, greatest vision, and compare that with your prayers. Are you asking God for things that align with the future you desire?
