Moses and the Fearless Women Who Raised Him

As with most of the stories in the Bible, we always brush over the impact of the women in the text and move right to the male hero. Well today, let’s change that!

Moses was raised surrounded by fearless women. I believe these women had a lot to do with Moses resilience and his compassion as a leader of the people.

Here are the 5 women that impacted Moses’ childhood and the lessons we can learn from them:

1 & 2- The Infamous Midwives Shiphrah and Puah

(Exodus 1:15-20)

These two midwives disobeyed a direct order from Pharaoh to kill every boy at birth. Do you understand how risky it must have been for them to refuse Pharaoh’s order plainly?

They decided, NO. We are not in the business of murdering children of God. We help deliver life, and that is what we will continue doing. God rewarded their courage by giving them families on their own.

Since the Bible does not mention other midwives working with the Hebrews around that time, there is a high probability that one of these midwives participated in the birth of Moses.

3- Moses’ Mother

(Exodus 2:1-3)

After hiding Moses for 3 months, she decided to part ways with him, leaning on her faith alone for Moses’ survival. Moses was getting too big to hide in the house, and instead of succumbing to fear, she decided she was going to take another risk by faith.

It must have been painful for this mother to place her son in that basket and leave him on the Nile in the hands of God. She must have thought of several scenarios doing so: maybe they’ll find him, maybe he’ll be eaten by an alligator, maybe, maybe, maybe… But that did not STOP her. She had faith in God for the life of her son.

4- Myriam, Moses’ Sister

(Exodus 2:4-10)

Not only she stayed by her brother’s side along the Nile, but she secured a nurturing childhood for Moses because she was a quick thinker. The verses told us she stood by the Nile watching her brother see what would happen. Some may have said, this is too painful; I can’t stay there. What if I get caught? What if something bad happens to him while I’m on the watch?

What if, what if, what if…… That did not stop Myriam. Not only was she determined to watch over her brother, but when Pharaoh’s daughter came along and took Moses, she approached her with a proposition so fast that I believe she probably already had this plan all along.

5- Pharaoh’s Daughter

(Exodus 5:5-10)

Another fearless rebel in the story. She knew her father’s decree about the Hebrews, yet that did not stop her from saving a Hebrew boy who later changed the history of her culture.

Let me paint this picture again: She raised a Hebrew boy in the house of Pharaoh when that Pharaoh was out to kill all of the Hebrew boys out of fear that they would replace him.

Moses may have been nursed by his biological mother probably during the first 5 years, but Pharaoh’s daughter cared for him, his education, and everything else in the palace.

That takes courage!

Pharaoh targeted boys because he thought the girls were harmless, when in reality, his downfall was initiated and spearheaded by the brave women.

But, this is not a lesson for men underestimating women.

This is a post for women underestimating their own influence in this world.

You believe it does not matter much because you have only one line in the story. Well, that’s a lie!

Wherever you are, however small your part may be, what you do MATTERS just as much!

God was not mistaken when he pulled you out of the man’s rib and said

“She is the piece missing here.”
